Things I wished this book had

I fell like I’m being picky here, but I would have liked some swimming drills. The book does emphasize a lot on dryland exercises and things you could do OUTSIDE OF THE WATER, but I would have liked the same type of energy on things to do in the water. Yes, I know there are millions of videos and hundreds of free resources in social media on drills, but I would have liked coach Brett to have weeded out some of his favorites.

My Personal Results

The “How to train” chapter was without a doubt my favorite. There is a lot of stuff I know self trained swimmers would like to know, but don’t really know where to get the information. Some of the info I liked was how to train and calculate race pace; how to use the color system designed by Jon Urbanchek to manage training loads depending on your goals (general fitness, competitive or endurance); and how to develop speed which is Brett’s specialty (this section is the one that has helped me the most).

Best Parts I Highlighted

“For short-distance events like the 50m to 200m races, understanding, and developing different types of speed can significantly impact a swimmers performance”

For open water swimmers I loved this tip, “Swimming against a tidal current requires strength, technique, and timing. Stay close to the shore and utilize a strong steady stroke to make gradual progress against the tide. Knowing the direction and strength of currents is essential for efficient and safe swimming in open water.” Open water swimming is all about safety first.

Who Should Skip This Book

This book isn’t for two types of people: elite-level coaches who’ve already mastered these concepts through decades of experience, and swimmers who prefer to simply follow their coach’s instructions without understanding the ‘why’ behind each workout. I know most of my content is in spanish, but I didn’t want english speaking swimmers to miss out on this great book. I’ve been a swimming instructor, coach and lifeguard for 20 years now. I’ve bought a crap load of swimming books in my time, and this one is great to start of with. It’s simple and really easy on the eyes.
